Public Engagement Program

Home » Our Work

Transparency in transportation planning is one of the main reasons metropolitan planning organizations (MPO) exist. It is our job to make sure that everyone can participate. This is most important to communities that are underserved by the transportation system or lack access to the decision-making process. There are many ways to get involved, from commenting on projects and plans to becoming a member of the Regional Transportation Advisory Council.

The current Public Engagement Plan (PDF) Public Engagement Plan (HTML) was endorsed by the MPO board on October 21, 2021 after a 45-day public review period. The PEP guides our efforts to ensure everyone has access to the transportation planning process. The PEP covers the full range of opportunities for members of the public to shape transportation decision-making in the region, from MPO meetings to in-person and online forums, digital communications, and pop-up engagement events.

Recognizing the impact of COVID-19, the updated plan focuses on virtual public involvement opportunities and guidelines. The new PEP states the principles that the MPO has committed to for all public engagement activities.

An amended version of the PEP was endorsed by the MPO board on September 15, 2022, after a 45-day public review period. The amendment aligns the PEP with the public review process for the FFY 2023 Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP). This process was changed to allow the MPO board to vote to waive the 21-day public review period for UPWP amendments in necessary circumstances to support flexibility in staff time and resources, and to allow for deeper engagement during the UPWP development process. You can find more information about this PEP amendment on the MPO calendar.

In addition to the PEP, the new PEP Guidebook (PDF) PEP Guidebook (HTML) provides quick, easy access to information on how to engage with the MPO.
