1.1.6   Wakefield- Comprehensive Downtown Transportation Improvements

Project Description: This project will provide operational and safety improvements along the Main Street and Water Street corridors in downtown Wakefield. Full-depth pavement reconstruction, reconfiguration of on-street parking, new bicycle facilities and refurbished sidewalks, reconstructed bus stops, and traffic signal reconstruction are included. In addition, a rail trail will be constructed between Main Street and Fosters Lane. This project will connect to the Main Street Reconstruction project (project ID 610545), which was programmed on the FFYs 2026–30 TIP in FFY 2028.

1.1.7   Needham- Newton- Bridge Replacement on Christina Street

Project Description: This project involves the design of a safe and accessible pedestrian and bike connection between the new Revere High School campus, Wonderland Park, and the surrounding neighborhoods. This project aims to evaluate a range of improvements, including enhanced sidewalk networks, shared-used paths, safer pedestrian crossings, potential grade-separated connections, and a crossing underneath the commuter rail tracks. Design funds are being requested to supplement the City of Revere’s “Reconnecting Communities” planning grant award from the US Department of Transportation.

2.1      MBTA

2.1.1   Symphony Station

There are several large cost drivers for this project which have emerged during planning, including substantial utilities work and earthworks.

 

2.1.2   Downtown Crossing Vertical Transportation Improvements Phase 2

2.1.4   Locomotive Procurement

These capital projects lay the foundation for a modernized system carrying frequent and reliable all-day service. Replacing and overhauling the aging rail fleet is critical to Regional Rail service goals and advancing decarbonization on the system.

 

2.1.5   North Station Rapid Transit Flooring Replacement

2.1.8   Haverhill Line Double Track Improvements

Project Description: This project involves planning and design of double track segments and second platforms at various stations on the Haverhill Line. This project will increase capacity of the Haverhill Line thus improving the reliability of intercity passenger rail service for all users (Amtrak, CSX, and the MBTA) and allowing for increased service frequency. Phase 1 will complete a 1.8 mile segment of second track through Ballardvale Station and add second platforms at both Ballardvale and Andover Stations. Phase 2 will construct a second track for 6.3 miles from Reading to Wilmington Junction with second platforms added at Reading and North Wilmington Stations.

 

2.1.9   Operational Enhancement of Bus Routes 714 and 716

Improvements include reduced headways, Sunday service for the Route 716 bus, and new or improved first-and-last-mile connections to commuter rail stations (Nantasket Junction and Canton Center) and state parks.

 

2.1.10 Bus Priority and Accessibility Improvements

These stops were identified and prioritized through the Program for Accessible Transit Infrastructure (PATI).


2.1.11 Better Bus Project - Operational Safety Improvements at Bus Stops

2.1.12 Silver Line Tunnel Flood Mitigation

2.1.13 Blue Line Tunnel Airport Flood Mitigation

The project includes upgrades to pump rooms and traction power systems, a new third rail between Airport and Wood Island, and removal of overhead catenary between Maverick and Airport Stations.

 

2.2      MWRTA

2.2.1   Procurement of 10 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Vehicles

Project Description: Awarded funds will allow for the procurement of additional fully accessible, heavy-duty 30-foot compressed natural gas (CNG) transit buses. Acquired vehicles will supplement the deployment of larger-capacity transit buses throughout high ridership routes, procured via federal and state funding sources. This request is a continuation of a past TIP project (S12972), funded through FFYs 2025–29 TIP Amendment 10.

 

2.2.2   Construction of Vehicle Maintenance and Fueling Facility

Project Description: This project involves the construction of a modern, purpose-built Vehicle Maintenance and Fueling Facility adjacent to the Blandin Hub operations headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts. Infrastructure will support routine vehicle maintenance, inspections, and repair across MWRTA’s growing and increasingly diverse fleet. In addition, the facility can allow for the on-site generation, storage, and dispensing of multiple fuel types. This project is scalable to include either on-site hydrogen generation, on-site hydrogen storage, or the ability to future proof the authority to position itself for hydrogen fuel in the future.

 

2.2.3   MWRTA- Procurement of Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Transit Vehicles

Project Description: This project involves the acquisition of fully accessible, heavy duty transit vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology. This facility will be specifically designed to store, service, and fuel the Authority’s diverse vehicle types powered by multiple propulsion sources.

 

2.3      CATA

2.3.1   CATA Access for All

Project Description: CATA Access for All aims to sustain and provide support to several smaller programs at CATA. The overall goal is to support CATA communities with improved accessibility to programs and mobility options.

 

2.3.2   Cape Ann Dialysis Transportation

Project Description: The project will continue dialysis transportation services for elderly individuals and people with disabilities throughout CATA’s service area, ensuring greater mobility and access to health care for CATA communities. 2.3.3   Magnolia Shuttle

Project Description: This funding would support a seasonal shuttle providing service between the Gloucester commuter rail station and Magnolia Village (and potentially Manchester commuter rail station, depending on timing and community feedback). The shuttle would initially run Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from the third weekend in June through Labor Day Monday, from 9AM to 5 PM. There is no service to Magnolia on Sundays and holidays; Saturday headways are 120 minutes (2 hours). Areas of interest along the route include Ravenswood Park, the Village of Magnolia, and Hammond Castle.

 

2.3.4   Vehicle Replacement

3.1.2   Quincy Bluebikes Expansion

3.1.3   Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, and Somerville Bluebikes Replacement of 58 Stations

Project Description: This is a joint project between four municipalities to replace 58 high-utility stations. The project includes 22 stations in Boston, four 19-dock stations in Brookline, 17 stations in Cambridge, and the replacement of 80 docks and 20 quad slabs in Somerville.

3.1.4   Joint Municipality Bluebikes Expansion, 1500 E-Bikes, 25 Classic Bikes, 17 Stations
