The recently completed 2011 Massachusetts Travel Survey is a primary data source for understanding travel patterns and developing travel demand models. This study focusses on one important class of regional trips in Eastern Massachusetts: the journey to work. A journey to work is defined as a group of one or more consecutive travel segments that begin at a commuter’s primary residence and end at the commuter’s primary workplace. The study gives an overview of journeys to work as a portion of total household travel, and then groups these journeys into six travel modes. The study describes journeys to work by these six modes, and compares results from the previous household survey, which was completed in 1991.
