This study includes relatively low-cost and easy-to-implement recommendations for improving pedestrian and bicycle access and safety in six urban centers in the Boston region. The selected urban centers are Union Square in the Boston neighborhood of Allston, Brookline Village, Downtown Chelsea, Downtown Framingham, Downtown Franklin, and Jackson Square in Weymouth. This Urban Centers study is a companion to the MPO’s May 2007 report Bicycle and Pedestrian Improvements in Town Centers, which evaluated six municipalities with a population of fewer than 20,000 people. This study examined six municipalities with a population of over 30,000. The recommendations for the towns and cities in these studies could serve as models for other communities in the region.
