Getting Around the Region – Overview
OVERVIEW • TRAFFIC CONDITIONS • INFO BY MODE OF TRAVEL The Boston region has risen to the challenge of its growing transportation needs and offers many new facilities and updated infrastructures for motor-vehicle passengers, transit riders, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The Big Dig´s Tip O´Neill and Ted Williams tunnels are operational. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (the "T") has hundreds of new vehicles, simplified fares, high-tech fare-collection equipment, and a heightened commitment to providing customer information. Pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly changes to both highway and transit facilities are being made. And while we still face congestion, like any big city, our transportation agencies, working with the region´s municipalities, are continually planning and implementing improvements aimed at increasing regional mobility for the years to come. The Boston region is one of only a small handful of metropolitan areas in North America that have not only an extensive system of expressways centered on the urban core, but also a well-developed network of integrated bus, rail, and boat services. Whether you´re a commuter planning tomorrow´s trip to work, or a visitor planning your first trip to Massachusetts, this page will direct you to the Web resources you need to get around our region. |
