Traffic volumes, the measure of how many vehicles use a particular roadway, are usually in the form of either average daily traffic (ADT) or average weekday traffic (AWDT). One use of this measure is as a complement to the roadway performance measures discussed on an accompanying page: traffic volumes indicate of how many users of the roadway system are affected by poor performance and how many users would benefit from an improvement.

Traffic counts are collected regularly in our region. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) does the bulk of this data collection, through three methods and programs: permanent, continuous-counting stations; a three-year coverage and classification count program; and special counts for specific studies or needs.
