Livability – Overview

Affordable housing, varied schools, nearby employment opportunities, community resources, and shopping in close proximity all contribute to the livability of a community, as do safe, affordable, and healthy options for getting around.

The MPO’s newly established Livability Program seeks to support livability throughout the region by way of three program components: regional forums, workshops, and online resources. The forums include in-depth discussions on various aspects of livability and elicit input from a broad range of participants. The workshops provide an opportunity to focus on issues at the level of a particular neighborhood or community. The online resources are intended to be useful to all, from state, regional, and municipal staff members to individual residents.

The Livability Program addresses walking, bicycling, parking, land use, urban design, public health, energy, climate change, and other environmental issues. It furthers the goals of the state’s Healthy Transportation Compact as well as those of the federal Partnership for Sustainable Communities established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
